CHAPTER ELEVEN

ICE

Two Weeks Later . . .

“VP, you look like you’re a little lost in thought there.” Viking chuckles, slapping me between my shoulder blades.

I tilt my head in his direction and grin because he’s right about me being lost in thought. Not a good thing when I’m supposed to be working on this car I’m hunched over. Instead of taking the transmission out, I’m staring into to abyss of the old fucking heap of a car. The owner of it needs to just take it to a junkyard and say to hell with it, then go get a whole new vehicle that won’t need more work than what it’s worth.

“Can you blame me?” I snort and glance to the office windows to see my woman working at her desk with the phone to her ear. I’ve gotta admit I don’t know what anyone at this garage would do without her here to manage all the shit she does.

“Nope,” he snorts and gives me a shit-eating grin. “Anyways, I stopped by to ask you if you can do something for me.”

“What would that be?” I ask, quirking a brow.

“Fawn’s stressing the fuck out all the time right now. It’s fuckin’ gettin’ to me. I wasn’t there for her the first time around. I don’t want . . .” He shakes his head, the grin slipping from his face. “My woman went through hell without me knowing about it. You were there for her in a way I wasn’t.”

“Prez . . .” I start, but Viking stops me, holding a hand up.

“No, let me say this so I can ask you what I need,” he says, and I nod in response. “Fawn trusts you. You’re more than just her cousin. You know this as well as we all do. The shit hand, you both, were dealt growing up would make anyone be that way. But Fawn’s doctor is telling her she needs to calm down and not to stress constantly—that the baby is good. However, it ain’t workin’. And with her stressin’ the way she is, it’s fuckin’ with my head more. I have no problem admitting it scares the fuck out of me, and I don’t want to lose the kid or my woman.”

“You want me to talk to her,” I state, sensing this is what he wants me to help him with.

Viking nods, releases a breath, and brushes his hand over his face. “Yeah, I need help. The doc is threatening to put her on bed rest if she doesn’t chill.”

“I’ll talk to her. Where is she now?” I grab a rag and wipe the grease from my hands, thinking of what’s the best course of action in calming my cousin down. And it hits me. “Don’t answer that. Just do me a favor, bring her to the cemetery. Don’t tell her that’s where you’re taking her, though. I’ll handle everything from there.”

Viking meets my gaze and stares at me as if he’s trying to figure out my game plan himself.
